Upper School (5th-8th)
In the Upper School we extend experiential exploration to an intellectually rich program utilizing adolescents' need for social collaboration, choice and voice, hands-on engagement and inquiry into the world around them. Upper School classrooms are characterized by joyful debate and dialogue, mutual trust and respect between teachers and students, and active engagement in a middle school program that celebrates adolescence.
AS ADOLESCENTS WORK TO FIND THEIR PLACE IN THE WORLD, THEY BENEFIT FROM A COMMUNITY WHERE THEY ARE KNOWN AND SUPPORTED.
A Typical Day
A visitor to any grade level in the Upper School might see students collaborating over analysis of a historical document or engaging in dialogue around a novel, deliberating possible methods for solving an equation, working closely with a teacher one-on-one during free time, reading in small groups, or hanging out in the net below the treehouse with new and old friends. Although the specifics of the schedule varies for each grade level, the mornings and directly after lunch are reserved for more traditional subjects and project work in grade level classes. In the afternoons, students can choose to go to any of the specialist studios, finish homework, seek support from teachers and peers, dive into projects, or connect with friends. Twice per week students have “flex” time with their grade level Head Teacher and their classmates. During this time, classes might hold community meetings, take field trips, engage in community service, and work on grade level projects directed by one of the Upper School Teachers. At the end of each day, students each fulfill their work jobs around the school wrapping up the day and helping ready the classrooms and grounds for the following day.
As adolescents work to find their place in the world, they benefit from a community where they are known and supported. In the Upper School, we extend the play-based experiential exploration to an intellectually rigorous program utilizing adolescents' need for social collaboration, hands-on engagement and inquiry into the world around them. Upper School classrooms are characterized by joyful debate and dialogue, mutual trust and respect between teachers and students, and active engagement in a rigorous program that celebrates adolescence. As students move through their school days in the Upper School, they are engaged in interdisciplinary inquiry and student-led projects as well as more traditional, teacher directed lessons. Daily academic work includes the expected middle school subjects of Humanities, Math, Science, and Spanish as well as Art, Ceramics, Physical Education and “Choice” elective courses taught through interdisciplinary inquiry and exploration.
